An elderly Clovis couple were killed Tuesday when a car they were in failed to stop at a rural intersection east of Fresno and was hit broadside by another vehicle, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The Fresno County Coroner's Office said the car was driven by the husband, who was in his 80s, when the accident happened shortly before 10 a.m. at McKinley and De Wolf avenues.

The names of the victims were not released Tuesday pending notification of relatives.

The driver of the other car, a 36-year-old woman whose name was not made public Tuesday, suffered minor injuries.

She was treated at the scene by paramedics and allowed to go home with relatives, officers said.

Investigators said the victims were traveling south on De Wolf when their Buick ran a stop sign and was struck on the driver's side by a westbound sport utility vehicle.

The intersection is controlled by stop signs on De Wolf.

The Buick was knocked southwest of the intersection and went airborne over a small canal.

A number of longtime residents of the area, including Betty Pendergras, 72, and Marjorie Burnett, 82, said they would like to see the crossing converted into a four-way-stop intersection.
